News & Events at WYIS

Next week, Student Services will present a Parent Workshop specifically for the parents of middle school students. During the workshop, you'll learn about the transition from elementary to 6th grade, as well as the expectations and philosophy of middle school. You'll also hear from the principals and get to meet the teachers, plus join in a general question & answer session.

The workshop is Tuesday, September 17, from 2-3PM in the first floor music room of the Performing Arts Building. Registration is not necessary. Please join us.

Save the date for the WYIS Talent Show! This year's show will be at 6:30 on Wednesday, September 25.

Talent Show is for students in grades 4-12 and is based on audition only.

Join us for this fun evening celebrating our students' talents!

This week, we continue testing students in MAP® (Measures of Academic Progress ®). We conduct MAP tests regularly throughout the year, which allows us to track students’ growth each time they test. To learn more about MAP, please visit https://www.nwea.org/parent-toolkit/ or contact your child’s teacher.

Week 1 MAP (September 2-6) - Grades 3-5, Grades 9-10
Week 2 MAP (September 9-12) - EC5-Grade 2, Grades 9-10 (Wed. only)
Week 3 MAP (September 16-20) - Grades 6-8

We are unable to add after-school activities to the mobile PowerSchool apps. Parents and students will have to use the PowerSchool website to view and register for after-school activities.

Elementary students will only be allowed to join 2 after-school activities each semester. This will give other children the opportunity to join an after-school activity as well. If there are still spots available one week after registration begins, or after September 4,then registration will open for children to join more than 2 activities. In this situation, parents will need to email Mr. Householder your child’s name, grade, and the exact name of the club so that he can manually add your child to the activity.

Quarter 1 (Q1) after-school activity registration began last week. Q1 Activities include the following (note updated activities in italics):

  • CrossFit Kids (EC4-5)
  • Arts & Crafts (Grades 1-2)
  • Badminton (Grades 2-3)
  • The Voice of China (Grades 2-5)
  • Collaborative Art (Grades 3-5)
  • Choir (Grades 3-5)
  • Soccer (Grades 3-5)
  • After-School Band (Grade 5, Ms. McCutchan)

  • Ukulele (Grades 6-8)
  • After-School Band (Grades 6-12)
  • Studio Ghibli Animation (Grades 6-12)
  • Mural Art (Grades 6-12)

If you have questions or ideas regarding after-school activities, please contact After-School Activities Coordinator, Aaron Householder.

WYIS' very own librarian, Hannah Carter, was nominated for librarian of the month in the online community she uses for curriculum and resources. Click here to see Ms. Carter's recognition on the Elementary Librarian website and to read the article she wrote. Congratulations on this great honor!

Our library team is amazing. Thank you Ms. Carter, Ms. Tang, and the team of parent volunteers who serve our students and community each day in the WYIS library. We appreciate you all!

Save the date for our biggest event of the year, International Day, where our whole community joins together to celebrate the cultural diversity at WYIS.

How can you get involved?

  • Wear clothes from either your own country or from a country you identify with
  • Make your favourite food to share from your country
  • Prepare some form of cultural entertainment that highlights your country and its culture.

You'll hear more about International Day in the coming months; but for now, mark your calendars and start your planning.

Every year, iSC sponsors an international service trip for students in grades 10-12. These service trips encourage students to grow in their experiences and personal character while serving impoverished families in international locations.

This school year's trip will be on January 19-29 in Luang Prabang, Laos. Students and staff will work with local people in Laos to support the community in a way that responsibly encourages future growth of that community.

Registration is now officially open. Interested students must register before October 8. Please register at this link: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/LaosRegistration2020. Questions? Contact Amanda Thornton (amanda.thornton@wyischina.com).

We love it when WYIS graduates and former students come back to campus for a visit, but we do ask your consideration when planning those visits. Please plan to visit only during lunchtime (12-12:45), in order to avoid distracting learning in the classroom. Also, please remember to check in with the front desk as a visitor, and follow all standard school rules. If you would like to arrange a visit outside of the lunch hour, it must be approved by the secondary principal. Questions? Please contact Secondary Principal, Tom Williams.
