When did the school start?

How is the school accredited?
WYIS is officially accredited by Cognia (formerly AdvancED) with the following divisions: The North Central Association Commission on Accreditation and School Improvement (NCA CASI), Northwest Accreditation Commission (NWAC), and the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Council on Accreditation and School Improvement (SACS CASI).
What qualifications do your teachers have?
Our teachers hold a bachelor’s degree. Many of our teachers have earned or are currently in the process of earning a master’s degree.
Where are your teachers from?
Our teachers are from all over, including the USA, UK, Canada, Philippines, Malaysia, Africa, and China.
What standards does the school follow?
Most of our subjects use the AERO (American Education Reaches Out) standards, which are based on the Common Core Standards
What are the main nationalities represented at the school?
USA, Canada, Korea, Hong Kong (SAR), Taiwan, Japan, and Australia
Does the school provide busing?
Yes

What is the school’s dress code?
Students are required to wear a school uniform, which can be purchased at the school. Specific details can be found in the student handbook.
Will my child be able to transition well to an international school?
Our experienced WYIS teachers will help your child through the transition process.
Are parents encouraged to be involved at the school?
Absolutely! We want our parents to be involved and encourage parents to be involved in the PTO, our Parent-Teacher Organization.
When can I visit the school?
Office hours are from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday except public holidays and vacation periods. You are welcome to schedule a visit by emailing admissions@wyischina.com
Can you babysit my child after school?
No. Students who are not involved in offered after-school activities should go home at school dismissal.
Are you a boarding school?
No
How does the school communicate with parents?
We communicate with parents through a variety of outlets. Our primary communication channels include WeChat, email, and phone.
Can you offer busing service to any location?
No. New bus stops will only be established at locations within Wuhan where a strong need is determined.
Do you have a swimming pool?
No, but we have a soccer field, CrossFit box, dance room, full-sized gym, playgrounds, and an overall amazing campus.
How can I be involved in PTO?

When I fill out the application form, what am I committing to?
Nothing. We use the application for information gathering purposes only. You can withdraw your application at any time if you decide not to come to WYIS.
Is there a deadline for submitting my application?
There is no specific deadline for the application. We have rolling admissions; however, we do not accept new students in quarter 4.
What documents should I prepare for my child’s enrollment?
Two years or more of academic records, immunization records, and any additional helpful information.
Should all the application documents be prepared with an English notarization?
All documents should be translated in English, but they do not need to be notarized.
How long does it normally take before I know if my child has been accepted to the school?
Parents will be notified within two weeks after completing the admissions assessment.
Does my child have to join the school on a specific date - the beginning of the school year, for example?
Not necessarily. We recommend students begin at the beginning of each quarter. We do not accept new students in quarter 4.
What are the admission level tests?
For grades 1-10, non-native English speakers complete a one-to-one English assessment test assessing their levels in speaking, listening, reading, and writing. Native English speakers use Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) as admissions testing. For ECC applicants, we require a half-hour interview with the family.
Do we need to come to the school for an assessment?
Yes
If my child fails the admissions test, when could they test again?
It is based on a case-by-case basis.
Is there a waiting list?
Waiting lists are established as needed based on grade level capacity
Does my child need to be fluent in English to attend?
Not necessarily
What is the minimum age we can start sending our child to school?
Students must be at least three years old by September 30 of the year in which they wish to enroll.
Do you admit students with disabilities or special learning needs?
We admit students based on the availability of resources to serve them appropriately.
In what circumstances is the application fee refunded?
The application fee is non-refundable
If my child is very close to the age cutoff date, can she/he be admitted to the grade I want?
Grade placement is based on the age of child in ECC. We also consider the learning experience for elementary applicants.
What curriculum does the school offer?
WYIS offers an American curriculum with an international flavor.
What should we prepare for the class?
Divisional principals will let you know what your child needs to be ready for school.
Should I buy textbooks and materials?
Textbooks will be provided. Each class requires different materials, which you'll learn about prior to school starting.
What degree do graduates earn from your school?
High school students will earn a high school diploma
Do you offer Advanced Placement (AP) courses?
Yes, we have several AP courses in high school.
My child isn't strong in their English abilities. Will they be able to learn well in class?
Students who need support in English will be enrolled in a special support class.
Will my child go down a grade if their English isn't good enough?
In some cases, students are asked to repeat a grade

What college entrance exams do you offer?
Students can take the SAT and ACT.
Will graduates be accepted to universities outside of china?
Absolutely. Our students are accepted to some of the top universities around the world.
What activities are available outside the classroom?
Our after-schol activities change throughout the year. Here's a short list of just a few we currently have or have had in the past: CrossFit Kids, Wuhan Troupe, badminton, table tennis, calligraphy, art, gardening, book club, Harry Potter club. After school clubs and activities are available for students from elementary through high school.
Do students have to take part in after-school activities?
No, after-school activities are optional.
Where do students go after graduation?
Many students return to their home countries to attend university, but students are prepared to enter universities worldwide.
Will my child have the opportunity to learn how to play musical instruments?
Elementary students are exposed to many different musical instruments, including the recorder, ukulele, drums, etc. Students in grade 5 are required to learn band instruments in music class. Students in middle school and high school are offered band as an elective.
