Dear WYIS Parents,
Happy Lunar New Year. Much has happened in Wuhan these last two weeks, and we hope your family is safe and well.
Due to the 2019 Novel Coronavirus, Wuhan government continues a temporary ban on internal city travel as well as incoming and outgoing travel. Local authorities announced normal business in Wuhan can begin again on February 14. Local schools are planning to run online classes from at least February 10-17.
Beginning this week, all iSC schools will begin home-based learning. At WYIS, teachers will continue lessons through a variety of online tools. The main platform used in EC3 through grade 4 is ClassDojo. Grades 5-12 will use Canvas. Northstar classes will continue as usual. Please be on the lookout for a communication from your teachers by the middle of the week.
We will make every effort to provide the most authentic learning experience possible. Teachers will use online activities and discussions, video-conferencing, independent and reflective work to promote high-level engagement for students. Opportunities will be provided as needed for students to participate in on-line sessions with academic services staff, such as a special education teacher or school counselor, in order to support success.
Based on my research and experience with online learning, students are most successful when they read the posted information and participate in the on-line sessions, check email and ClassDojo or Canvas each day, and connect with their teacher(s) on a regular basis.
Students will need access to a computer with sound and high-speed internet to be able to listen and watch video. Please check to see your technology is working correctly and seek technical support as required.
Attendance will be noted based on completion of online activities, discussions, and assignments. Teachers will outline which activities will be graded.
When Wuhan opens again, we will resume normal classes. Updates will be provided to families through the school website, email, and PTO WeChat groups. We will continue to work with local authorities to identify when we can re-open the school campus, and we will keep families informed.
We stand united with the city of Wuhan in prevention and control efforts. We encourage everyone to stay strong and connected to friends and family during this time.
