Welcome to ECC

The WYIS Early Childhood Center exists to support parents and guardians in their responsibility to nurture and train their children. Thus, the Early Childhood Center provides a secure, loving environment focused on meeting each child’s social, academic, physical, and spiritual needs within an active learning environment. Large, well-equipped classrooms and exciting outdoor play areas invite children to learn.

As we look toward the start of a new school year in the ECC, I want to present here some nuggets of information that describe who we are and what you can expect if you choose to partner with us in the education of your young child.

  • The WYIS Early Childhood Center utilizes a creative curriculum for preschool. This hands-on, active learning curriculum is project-based, addressing intellectual goals, dispositions, and habits of mind.  This includes initiative, motivation, self-regulation, problem solving, and social competency.
  • Academic tasks within our literacy-rich environment include emergent literacy and numeracy skills as well as scientific inquiry. Authentic methods encourage developing literacy skills integrated into the program daily.
  • Art, Chinese, Library, Music, and Physical Education are a part of the weekly curriculum.

As Jerome Berryman describes, “Wisdom, herself, is interpreted as being a child playing delightfully…so that our creative nature and our playful wisdom are bound together.” In this way, the Wuhan Yangtze International School ECC is excited to impact the life of every ECC student.

ECC Overview

The goal of our Early Childhood Center (ECC) is to provide a caring environment that sets a foundation for the social, emotional, physical, intellectual, and spiritual development of each child. ECC is wholly committed to the total development of each child placed under our care.

In our safe and nurturing environment, ECC students learn how to positively interact with those around them in a multicultural setting. Our teachers and specialists use an age-appropriate curriculum where students enjoy hands-on learning, providing them the opportunity to grow the necessary skills for a well-rounded development. Each classroom is equipped with both a lead teacher and a teaching intern, ensuring that students are provided with attention and care.

In addition to core studies in their regular classroom, ECC students also enjoy class time with specialized teachers for Art, Physical Education, Language Acquisition, and Music. Through scheduled time with elementary classes, ECC students also have the opportunity to build relationships with older students, reinforcing the sense of community that we strive to maintain at WYIS.

The WYIS ECC is dedicated to the success of each child. Every child is unique, and we strive to provide an opportunity for every ECC student to love, learn, smile, and laugh, inspiring them to become lifelong learners.

Curriculum

EC3: Through a focus on sensory learning skills, students are able to touch and experience letters, nature, and numbers. Students in this class are taught how to share, care, and interact with other students.
EC4: Our EC4 program is focused on letter sounds, legible handwriting, phonetic awareness, numbers to 50, addition and subtraction to sums of 10. This class also uses a variety of crafts to increase small motor skills.
EC5: Kindergarten is designed for mastery of foundational phonics and reading, math solutions of numbers to 100, writing sentences, and strengthening critical thinking skills. The combination of these three classes leads to future success in our elementary school.

Along with regular classroom courses, students get to work out their energy in Physical Education classes, create masterpieces through Art and Music classes, and learn a second language through daily sessions with their Chinese or English language teacher. These ECC specialized programs were implemented to bring about a well-balanced curriculum for our youngest of students.

Technology is interwoven into all aspects of learning here at WYIS, and it is our goal to see that our students are exposed to technology from an early age.

In our ECC program, tech specialists work with teachers to help integrate technology into the classrooms. Children in the ECC use laptops and iPads to assist with their learning. WYIS follows standards outlined by the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE). As ECC students grow into Elementary and Secondary students, having this foundation of technology in the classroom gives them an advantage in their future years.

“There are many little ways to enlarge a child’s world. Love of books is the best of all.” -Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis

Every child at WYIS is encouraged to learn and explore through reading. Whether your child learns through books housed in the classroom library or if they get lost in the captivating storytelling during a scheduled reading in the library, we desire for each child to fall in love with the gift of reading. Our ECC students have scheduled library visits where they listen to story time and borrow books. Books for new and emerging readers are plentiful in our spacious and comfortable library, allowing students the ability to pick books that speak to their sense of wonder and creativity of the moment.

Progress & Reporting

Strong cooperation between parents and the school are a key element in having a successful education experience. Each school year starts with a new parents meeting and a time to visit the classroom to get acquainted with your child’s learning environment and teachers. We also have more formal Parent Teacher Conferences in the fall and the spring. These conferences provide an opportunity for parents to meet with their child’s class teacher on an individual basis and review their child’s progress and next steps. Teachers also have regular communication with parents through newsletters, and all primary students receive a quarterly report card.

Learning Support

At WYIS, we are committed to seeing that every individual has an opportunity to learn and grow. A variety of support resources are available, including academic services, counseling services, and library and technology resources. A partnership between classroom teachers, support staff, and families creates the best learning outcomes.

WYIS is committed to preparing all students for the next step in education. Teachers offer support to students with individual needs through diversified lesson plans, modified curriculum, and engaging, hands-on learning experiences. When  necessary, one-on-one assistance or small group instruction is offered to maximize learning.

WYIS is dedicated to providing a nurturing, holistic environment in which all students can excel. Our qualified staff and professionally trained counselor collaborate to offer assistance in regards to emotional and social issues, working with students and parents to assist in identifying, coping with, and overcoming social and emotional questions, as well as providing assistance with transition into and out of the school community.

We believe that children grow and learn best in a secure, nurturing environment. At WYIS, we place high importance on seeing that our students feel valued, successful, and esteemed. We treat each child with respect and encourage them to treat others in the same manner. Through developing character, we are positioning our students to become positive members of our global society.

English Language Development

WYIS provides assistance for ECC students who need English-as-a-Second Language (ESL) support.  Our ESL staff are qualified English and /or ESL-specialized teachers who, through play-based and multi-sensory learning, assist our students to reach a greater fluency in English.  This program focuses on age-appropriate vocabulary building and addresses listening, speaking, reading, and writing needs.

Our ESL department offers an excellent student-to-teacher ratio and hires qualified teachers with English and/or ESL/ESOL specialization. ESL support placement is determined using the WIDA placement test for admissions and level assessment. Our ESL program addresses both social and academic listening, speaking, reading, and writing needs through individualized curriculum and targeting student strengths.
